Freedom – Does it exist?
Everybody wants freedom. We hate the idea of being in bondage. What is freedom? Here are Google’s definitions of freedom:
the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants.
the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.Does freedom mean absolute right? Does it mean the absence of rules? This is a stanza from a very popular song ‘Let it go’ from multi-award-winning Hollywood animated movie ‘Frozen’:
It’s time to see
What I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong
No rules for me
This so clearly paints the picture of the culture we are currently living in. No right or wrong, no rules for me, I am free!
How will the world look like if everyone starts doing whatever they wanted? There are no rules. No rules for students at school; No rules for athletes in a sport; No rules for drivers on the street; No laws for punishing criminals etc. I do not believe the world will be a good or safe place this way. We are always bound by some set of rules which we must follow in order to be able to live well.
In the Bible, we see that God created Adam and Eve and gave them freedom, but God also gave them clear instructions on how far they can go in exercising their freedom. God set boundaries. When they crossed the line and misused their freedom, they actually fell into greater slavery. As J.M. Comer says – A slavery of freedom. This is the irony of freedom today. We have become incurably self-centered and self-bound. All our default heart choices are self-indulging. We will suffocate and kill ourselves by our own desires. We are bound by our own wants and loves. The external rules do bind us physically but the internal bondage destroys our soul.
Hence, in my opinion, there is no freedom, only slavery to the right master. In other words, freedom is but serving a good master. Even in the Bible, it says clearly, ‘Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.’ 1 Peter 2:16. According to scriptures, freedom equals God’s slaves. We will always be slaves to something but freedom is to be God’s slaves because only God is a good, wise and loving master.
